Staying the area of the Scrub or Brush Cherry, turn left to find the common or narrow-leafed Lilly Pilly, (Acmena smithii) in the garden bed on your right. This Lilly Pilly has pale pink to mauve fruit after clusters of white flowers in summer and is a popular small tree for the garden.

Lilly Pilly

“Well, hello there dear, my name is Maeve, and I am one of the lovely local Lilly Pilli’s. I’m also the treasurer of the BWA, I work alongside Myrtle and the other trees to keep things sweet and organized. We monitor the mumblings in the mycelium to make sure everyone is connected and cared for.”

The Lilly Pilly tree: "Well, hello there dear, my name is Maeve, and I am one of the lovely local Lilly Pilli’s. I’m also the treasurer of the BWA, I work alongside Myrtle and the other trees to keep things sweet and organized. We monitor the mumblings in the mycelium to make sure everyone is connected and cared for.

I have to confess; I am quite grateful to be planted in the Botanical Gardens. I got a message from my cousin yesterday saying how bad it is in the Jones’s backyard, they have dogs! I am thankful to say that there are no dogs in the Botanical Gardens. Children jumping on my bed sometimes, yes, the occasional pesky possum but no pulling of the leaves or picking of the berries. We are quite fortunate here in the Botanical Gardens. Fed, watered and the occasional fertilization and we get to see all the coming and goings without the backyard brutality!

I also have fluffy white flowers that bloom and turn into berries, that you can turn into jam and other delicious things. But that’s enough, I’m sure that you have plenty of other trees to go and talk to. Oh yes, dear there are many other trees that have something to say if you just take the time and stop and listen. But that’s it, thank you and come again next time!"
