Youth Space Comic Art Project

Lavington Library’s young adult section is undergoing a transformation thanks to an art project led by comic artist Mandy Ord. Lavington youth, working together with Mandy Ord and local textile artist Kurt Saggers, are creating comic illustrations to cover the walls, bean bags and cushions of the library’s youth area.

Working in response to ideas and themes shared by young people engaged through the library and The Hive, YES Unlimited’s Youth Resource Centre in Lavington, Mandy developed large scale graphic illustrations which participants have been painting directly onto the walls of the youth space.

The ten young people involved in the project are currently completing the artworks in preparation for a launch event as part of the opening of the Write Around the Murray Festival.

The project is about giving young people the opportunity to express themselves creatively and to develop a sense of identity and representation in the Lavington Library. It’s also about the Library staff and young people developing greater mutual understanding through the process, and building relationships based on mutual respect.

The Staff hopes it will be a space that young people feel connected to, where they can connect with other young people and the wider community, and feel more comfortable about using the library space.

This project was made possible by Murray Arts, Regional Arts NSW Country Arts Support Program (CASP) and Create NSW.
