For the sixth year, Sydney Writers’ Festival returns to the LibraryMuseum with Live & Local, livestreaming headline events to the regions.

Prepare to be invigorated and engaged by conversations, debates and discussions featuring some of the world’s finest writers and thinkers. Audiences can also participate in live Q&A sessions at each event, texting questions straight to the Sydney stage.

Program

Friday 20 May

  • 10am-11am Art Spiegelman For more than 50 years, Art Spiegelman has defined and redefined the world of visual storytelling. Appearing live via video, he reflects on his Pulitzer Prize–winning masterpiece MAUS, censorship and prejudice, with host Morris Gleitzman.
  • 12pm-1pm Michelle de Krester & Christos Tsiolkas Two of the biggest names in Australian literature, Michelle de Kretser (Scary Monsters) and Christos Tsiolkas (7 1/2) come together to discuss their latest books with Roanna Gonsalves.
  • 2pm-3pm Steve Toltz Booker-shortlisted author Steve Toltz discusses his highly anticipated new novel, Here Goes Nothing, live via video with acclaimed author of The Believer, Sarah Krasnostein.
  • 4pm-5pm But Not Forgotten Listen to this remembrance of writers past, including Jackie Huggins on bell hooks; Sarah Krasnostein on Joan Didion; Melissa Lucashenko on Keri Hulme; and others. Hosted by Susan Wyndham.

Saturday 21 May

  • 10am-11am Barrie Cassidy & Friends: Election 2022 The only thing more essential for election 2022 than a sausage in a bread roll is this panel of Barrie Cassidy, Fran Kelly, Niki Savva & Amy Remeikis.
  • 12pm-1pm - Program Change - Sarah Winman: Still Life Bestselling British author Sarah Winman talks about art, love and war in her joyous and richly drawn new novel Still Life. She appears live via video in conversation with Ailsa Piper. (This event replaces Derecka Purnell - Becoming Abolitionists)
  • 2pm-3pm Maxine Beneba Clarke & Omar Musa Acclaimed Australian artists and writers Maxine Beneba Clarke (How Decent Folk Behave) and Omar Musa (Killernova) discuss their electrifying and unsparing new poetry collections, in conversation with Evelyn Araluen (Dropbear).
  • 4pm-5pm The Limits of Imagination Damon Galgut (The Promise), Larissa Behrendt (After Story) and Paige Clark (She Is Haunted) join host Sisonke Msimang to explore the responsibilities and opportunities of the creative writer and artist and ask: who gets to tell a story?
