Past Lives, Present Tense
Mayday Hills, the former mental hospital in Beechworth, has an iconic presence in the Border region. For several years, a cross-disciplinary research team has been collecting data including interviews, photographs and artefacts, creating artworks and publications in response to the history of the site.
This exhibition presents objects from a range of private collections connected with the Mayday Hills site, some of which have not been seen in public before, along with artistic work by Alison Watts, Eileen Clark and Jennifer Munday. It represents the outcomes of various aspects of the researchers’ work: social history, archival research and the arts. This research continues, and visitors are encouraged to leave their own recollections of the site when visiting the exhibition. We can never know enough about our past, even if it’s an uncomfortable one.

Collections from the Asylum extends the 2016 exhibition Up Top: A Sense of Place for Mayday Hills Hospital. It is a partnership between Charles Sturt University, Southern Cross University and Albury LibraryMuseum.
